For the last two years, we’ve been talking with our clients in our Focus Groups about telematics and how it’s the game changer for the aftermarket in terms of internal business processes and what has to be adjusted. Telematics is also a huge opportunity for individual shops and the total overall aftermarket to grow its business.
Why is the industry not heavily engaged about this topic? We, as a sector of the automotive industry, are now at least a year and a half behind in this discussion. I have met shop owners and many jobbers that look at me cross-eyed when I asked, “Have you investigated the telematics issue and what are you doing about it?” They simply ask “What’s telematics”?
This kind of approach to industry must stop.
Take the time to thoroughly learn about this topic. Read the industry journals—they’ve all had articles about the topic. Ask your supplier about the investments required and how this works. To be blunt, if they don’t know, perhaps it’s time to change to a more progressive supplier who stays on top of industry issues and searches out the information you must know to grow your business. When your business grows, their business grows. That goes for any topic, not just telematics.
Take your head out of the sand and see the new opportunities in front of you. Telematics not only secures the relationship between you and your individual client, but it can also grow small fleet business as well.
